A generator is designed to provide emergency power, and with proper care and maintenance, a Champion portable generator can provide years of service. However, you may encounter problems, particularly if regular maintenance isn’t performed. Because a generator is used in emergency situations, it’s vital that it runs properly and that you know what to look for when it doesn’t.

Difficult to Start

Champion portable generators that are hard to start may have a dirty or blocked filter. Check your owner's manual for the location of the air filter, which is typically at the front of the generator near the choke. Remove the filter and replace it with a new one. A loose spark plug wire can also cause the generator to have trouble starting or to run poorly. Check that the spark plug wires are installed properly, and try to start the generator again. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, remove the spark plug and inspect its condition. If it’s dirty or damaged, replace it with a new one.

Shuts Down During Operation

If your Champion portable generator starts, but shuts down during operation, check the fuel tank first. If your tank is full, check the oil level. Fill the crankcase with oil if it’s low, and restart the generator. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, make sure the generator is on a flat, level surface. Champion portable generators don’t typically overheat, but if there is insufficient ventilation or air is restricted, this can also cause them to shut down after overheating. Clean the filter and move the generator to a well-ventilated area. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, take the generator to a certified Champion dealer for service.

Won't Start at All

If your Champion portable generator will not start, make sure it has enough fuel. Fuel degrades over time, so if your generator hasn’t been used in a while, it may have degraded enough to prevent the generator from starting. You can prevent degraded fuel by starting your generator once a week and letting it run for a few minutes. Drain the fuel tank and refill it with new fuel, then try to start the generator again. If it still won’t start, replace the spark plugs. If troubleshooting doesn’t resolve the problem, contact a certified dealer to inspect and repair the generator.

Preventative Maintenance

When your generator is in operation, check the oil level every 8 hours or at least once daily. For every 50 hours of operation, or at least once each season, clean the air filter and change the oil. After each 100 hours of operation, or at least once every season, clean and adjust the spark plug, and replace if necessary. When your generator is not in use, turn it on at least once every 30 days and let it run for about 20 minutes to ensure it is working properly. Keep the exterior of the generator clean at all times, and store it on a flat, level surface in a clean, dry location, but never use a garden hose to clean any part. If water gets into the generator through the cooling slots, it may damage the internal parts. Use a damp cloth to clean the exterior of the generator and an air compressor with 25 psi of pressure to clear dirt and debris.
